Dreaming About My Lambeau Field
It’s those little things that make my day.
One is my drive back home, specifically when I’m less than a minute away from my house. I take the long way back just so I can pass by it. They usually play late into the night; I guess I drive by after my so-called workout just as they start the game. I go straight through the roundabout while keeping my eyes on the two, brightly lit fields of sand that are right next to a modest, beige-bricked mosque.
I purposefully lower the passenger window down so I can hear them yelling and calling at each other across the field. That’s when I smile. It’s that sort of smile that gets you just a bit teary eyed and warms your cheeks up, like when a little toddler bounces before you in giggles.
I don’t know what I feel when I see those young men playing soccer, but it brings back memories of childhood’s naiveté, when your only concerns were about weekend plans at a friend’s house, “Should we go to the movies or stay in?” or “You’re not coming to the chalet this weekend!?”
Although our neighborhood is not busy, I sometimes seriously fear that I will run someone over because all my attention is fixated on the men kicking a black and white ball around.
I park my car behind our house and eventually head up to my room feeling slightly empty and drained. I brush my teeth and wonder if anyone else squeezes his/her toothpaste in their mouth straight from the tube instead of on the actual toothbrush. I shrug the thought and scrub away.
As I lay in bed, I strain my ears trying to listen to them. Are they still playing? I hear a few shouts. Yup, they sure are. I smile to myself and breathe in deeply. My men on the field make me feel safe and wonderfully nostalgic.

I saw “Requiem for a Dream” yesterday night. It is one of those depressing and disturbing drug movies that you admire and you hate yourself for doing so. The film, a beautiful phantasmagoria of self-destructive addictions directed by the audacious Darren Aronofsky, starred Ellen Burstyn as one of the three main characters’ mother; her acting was phenomenally brilliant, to say the very least. In any case, if you do decide to watch this emotional wringer, take a nice, long stroll afterwards in the wonderful weather we have outside.
One of the things that make me beam with pride is forking over exact change. When the cash register flashes a green “1.845 fils,” I quickly rummage through my wallet’s little zipper in hopes of finding the needed silver and copper coins.
I hardly face any traffic when I return home from work. However last Sunday, I was about to run over every churchgoer on Fahad Al-Salem Street. People were carelessly cavorting about on the roads taking no heed to approaching cars, gigantic buses bopped about as they assumed the personality of a MINI Cooper while attempting to squeeze between the traffic, and taxi drivers forwent their car signals and flailed their arms out of their car windows instead so as to warn others where they were maneuvering their darned vehicle. What surprised me the most was that there were no patrol cars around. I almost had a heart attack when an extremely slow driver in front of me at the Sheraton roundabout decided to stop and chat with his friends who were teetering on the curb. It is times like these when I wished I had a basket of rotten eggs by my side.
One of the old Arabic sayings claims that half a woman’s beauty lies in her hair. I tend to agree since long, silky and healthy-looking hair is feminine and sensual. In Kuwait, the other half of a woman’s beauty would lie in the size of her sunglasses. Seriously, I can hardly tell girls apart when they wear their hair in their face with gigantic sunglasses overwhelming their features.
Did you ever repeat a word over and over again out loud until you felt that it does not make any sense? Try it out. Say, “Ridiculous…reedic-youlous…ree-dic-you-lous...
ree----dic----you----lous…..reedicyoulassypoo?”
Speaking of not making sense, I have just discovered that the “d” in Lindt is silent. I used to pronounce it as “Lin-dit,” but after saying it out loud before knowledgeable company, I was laughed at for about ten minutes or so. The proper pronunciation is “Lint.” This makes me think of IKEA. I grew up pronouncing it like the general public does, “ee-kee-yah” as opposed to the proper “eye-kee-yugh.” Either way, I switch between the two depending on who I’m speaking to so as to not seem…reedicyoulassypoo?
